It can be quite challenging, knowing just where to look for a specific resource to address a certain concern that you have.
What is “therapy”? What does a social worker do? A psychologist?
What happens if I need medication? What is a self help or support group?Our EAP Coordinators have the time and expertise to research the vast array of community organizations and private practitioners, internet directories, and other resources that will best serve you.
Here is a glossary of a few terms that might help you make some decisions with the assistance of the EAP Coordinator:
Psychologists: clinical psychologists usually treat single patients; may work as counselors in businesses, schools, mental health centers, hospitals. Usually have a doctoral degrees plus post doctoral training.
Psychiatrists: medical doctors with several years of post graduate training. Can prescribe meds, and hospitalize patients. Can treat a range of problems from severe psychoses, to milder emotional disorders; can specialize in child, adolescent, or geriatric medicine.
Psychiatric social workers: may have private practice, or active in community programs, such as substance abuse clinics. Must be licensed.
Social Worker: Social work is a discipline involving the application of social theory and research to improve the lives of individuals, groups, and societies. Social Workers hold a professional degree, have a license, or are professionally registered.
